MR No.: 014/18
Singapore, Tuesday, 20 March 2018
More than 50,000 students in Brazil will soon enjoy a more Singaporean-style education. Established Singapore education player NIE International (NIEI) piloted a teacher training programme in the city of Joinville, Santa Catarina State, marking their first entry into Latin America. The programme is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) NIEI signed with one of Brazil’s largest non-governmental organisations (NGO), the Ayrton Senna Institute1 (IAS), to collaborate and improve the educational system in Brazil. The partnership was facilitated by International Enterprise (IE) Singapore.
The partnership is in line with NIEI’s business plan to promote their expertise in teacher training and school leadership, both locally and internationally. NIEI has conducted such programmes in markets including China, Middle East and ASEAN countries.
Leveraging the experience of IAS and its understanding of the education field in Brazil, NIEI hopes to facilitate the mutual sharing of best practices and expertise in pedagogy and educational leadership through providing teacher training and leadership training for the educators.
Said Professor Paul Teng, Managing Director, NIEI, “This is an important first step that broadens NIEI’s international outreach efforts into a key region. We are grateful to IE Singapore for linking us with an influential local partner, the Ayrton Senna Institute, in our first venture into Brazil and look forward to this as a catalyst for expanded collaboration.”
NIEI conducted the first five-day teacher training programme in Joinville from 5– 9 March 2018 for Math and Science. This was supported by IAS, which will also support and fund subsequent training activities. The pilot programme trained 30 Math and 30 Science public elementary school teachers who will return to their respective schools to share the learnings with other teachers, benefitting more than 50,000 elementary school students in the municipality. Following the pilot, IAS aims to replicate the teacher training programme in more cities across Brazil.
IE Singapore connected NIEI to IAS and facilitated discussions for the partnership. IE Singapore is also working with IAS to bring in Singapore educational players across the value chain, including educational technology, content development and continuous learning as part of a comprehensive strategy to participate in Brazil’s educational ecosystem. Several projects are currently under discussion.
Said Mr Khor Aik Lam, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, IE Singapore, “Brazil has placed strong focus on improving their education system in the past few years. Given Singapore’s established and well-received educational system, there are opportunities for Singapore educational players to collaborate with Brazil. IE Singapore will continue to work with partners to open doors for Singapore companies in Brazil and Latin America.”
Public education in Brazil accounted for 16.1% of total government expenditure, taking up 5.2% of GDP in 20132. The Brazilian education field is expected to cross S$461.7 billion by 20203.
The MOU was signed today at the NIE campus, witnessed by the Secretary of Education of Santa Catarina State, Mr. Eduardo Deschamps.
